Tubal sterilization

Tubal sterilization is available for the woman who has completed her childbearing and desires a permanent birth control solution. There are now two approaches for this.

Traditionally laparoscopy has been utilized to block off the tube by cauterization or with stainless steel or plastic clips. This is performed through two small incisions in the abdomen. It is performed as an outpatient procedure with general anesthesia. The procedure takes about twenty minutes. Recovery is 1-2 days.

We are also now offering our patients ESSURE sterilization. This involves inserting small coiled implants into the ends of the tubes through the uterus. It can be performed in the office with oral sedation and a local anesthesia. Recovery is only one day. Patient cost is often less since it is an office procedure.
